High up on the plateau of Bleaklow is a little-frequented yet quality bouldering area with solid rock and a curious local ethic: no sharing written details of any routes. So leave your guidebook behind, grab your pad and a sense of adventure and join in for a unique Peak bouldering experience. One day’s bouldering isn’t enough? Well there’s the option to bivvy up there, then spend the Sunday doing even more bouldering at nearby Barrow Stones.
I will be setting off from Woodhead Pass (parking SK130997/53.493945, -1.804717) around 11:30 on Saturday; meet me there or meet at the crag. Approaches are also possible from the south, either from Snakes Pass summit or Howden Reservoir. BMC RAD has good descriptions of the Woodhead and Howden approaches (https://services.thebmc.co.uk/modules/RAD/View.aspx?id=3163) and UKC details the Snakes Pass approach. The crag is at ref SK130961/53.461489, -1.805668. Be warned all approaches take over an hour and are always boggy. People are welcome to show up just for a single day, or just for the bivvy if that’s your thing. As for the bivvy spot, we will see what we can find on the day, but will be close to Grinah stones. If the weather is too poor for bouldering, this meet will instead become a walk/run to look at some wet rocks (probably followed by pub), with the same start time and location. A future Rucksack classic or another entry in my list of unpopular Rucksack Club meets (and it’s a long list)? The premise is simple and not original. Every hour, on the hour, for 24 hours you need to run my local training loop – 4.6km, 120m ascent starting and finishing at my front door. I can run it in 25 mins and walk it in 45min so it’s going to be easy, yes? Race HQ is my son’s shed, which will have a continuously operating espresso machine and there will be a post-race party on the Sunday afternoon. I’ll even get the pizza oven out, assuming I am still awake. If you don’t fancy the full experience, there will be a couple of easier options. The half – one lap every two hours and the Fun Run – one lap every 3 hours, so come and join in the fun.
Logistics – race starts at 12 noon on Saturday 24 May. I can provide floor space and limited camping space in the garden. Apart from espressos and post-race pizzas you will need to be self-sufficient. The route is 99% off road (limestone double track) and is out and back so should be pretty sociable.
Early expressions of interest would be useful so that I have some idea of if I am running/ walking/ hobbling on my own or if I need to inform DCC! Non runners, walkers, hobblers are also welcome and can hang out in Race HQ (which has a dart board and table football) and provide encouragement.
