2024 Rucksack Club Calendar – A review

We received this very kind review for the 2024 Calendar: “Having been lucky enough to identify a photo of “Long Tall Sally” on UKC  I won a copy of the CAC / Rucksack Club 2024 calendar, and with it a request to write a review, so here goes. How do you review a calendar? Well, does it work? A quick check indicated that there are seven days in every week, 2024 starts on a Monday and February 29th is a Thursday, all good so far. There’s also enough room on each day to write in the family’s appointments, so it succeeds in its primary function! What else would you want from a calendar: interesting and inspiring photos? There’s plenty to choose from, one large and three small for each month plus the cover and a few at the back. The cover photo of “Ancient Art” at the Fisher Towers is impressive but for some reason does not tempt me to travel west for an ascent! My personal favourite is October’s “Long Tall Sally” not since it won me a copy, but because it makes me want to go back and re-climb it (last time was 1983) even though it’s probably[…]

John Beatty at Bury Photographic Society Thursday 30th November

Here is advance notice of an upcoming talk by Rucksack Club member John Beatty. John needs no introduction on this web site but here goes anyway. On Thursday 30th November we welcome professional photographer John Beatty to Bury Photographic Society. John is one of Britain’s most exciting and stimulating nature, travel and adventure photographers. His work is chiefly concerned with the timeless rhythms of the natural world, its beauty and simplicity and man’s place within it. For over thirty years, John has ventured across the world returning with stories of his experiences of the wilderness which few have encountered. He has witnessed darkness and fire with Kalahari bushmen; wolves, walrus and streams of caribou in Aleutian Alaska; collected shells from Pacific beaches, run with wilderbeests in the ancient dusts of Serengeti; hiked to hidden springs of Grand Canyon. His travels are infused with adventure and wonderment, from Galapagos to the Andes, Namibia, Mongolia and the Amazon Basin. Closer to home, John has photographed almost all wild land locations in Britain, from the windswept tors of Cornwall to white strands of the Outer Hebrides. As a photographer of wilderness it is the drama of landscape, its biodiversity and wild weather that attracts[…]

Beudy bookings update

Its a reasonably busy November at Beudy. This coming weekend (4/5) Lewis Ashton is running his running meet, although I’m sure Lewis would be happy to welcome you even if running isn’t your thing. Contact Lewis for details. The following weekend (11/12) sees the return of the Powsers MC (a Glossop based club) who enjoyed Beudy so much last year. They have booked 11 spaces so there is room if you want to join them. Audrey Russell’s meet (18/19) is always an enjoyable weekend – contact Audrey if you would like to go. Gary Noble has booked six spaces for the following weekend (25/26) so there is availability. In December, Guildford MC have booked the entire hut for the first weekend (2/3) and intend having their Annual Dinner around the dining room table in front of the logburner – what a good idea! Apart from that, the rest of the month is available. Why not spend the run up to Christmas (or even Christmas itself) away from it all? January is shaping up to be busy. Get your booking in to avoid disappointment! As ever, contact me or Steve Gregory to make a booking.
