October can bring wild days but also wonderful days; almost like a natural sauna. The Rucksack Club will probably experience both, as we have the usual full programme: - We begin with our annual Working Meet at High Moss, our superb hut in the Duddon Valley. This meet has been consistently popular in recent years as members join in with paint brushes, trowels and screwdrivers to keep the hut in tip-top condition. - Next we have a day walk of 14 miles across moorland in the clutches of conurbation around Winter Hill and Anglezarke Moor. - Days later begins our Scottish Island Meet, which this year gives us five or six days on Rum. We've had some fabulous meets on Rum in previous years, so

Now that summer has finally arrived, the Rucksack Club is wasting no time getting out there - here's what's in store for August: - We congregate at the historic Cheshire climbing location of Helsby, where Colin Kirkus wrote the early guidebook, for a day on the crags (10th August). But it's not just a climbing meet - there is a walking alternative. - On 17-18 August we head to Llanthony in South Wales for a couple of days on the Black Mountains. The campsite adjoints the impressive ruins of Llanthony Priory, nestled in the valley between ridges that we will explore, before seeking refreshment at a nearby inn. - Over Bank Holiday weekend we have a family meet at our superb Lake District hut, High

Summer has been late arriving, but it will surely put in an appearance for the Rucksack Club's July programme: - We begin the month with a joint meet with the Wayfarers' Club at our wonderful Lake District hut, High Moss, which will be the base for all manner of outdoor activities. - A week later we have a weekend focussed on open water swimming, based at our cosy hut in Eryri. The big challenge will be a double-length swim along Llyn Padarn - are you up to it? No problem if not, we have some shorter-length swims in prospect. - The month culminates in our President's Meet, which this year takes the form of a challenge to complete the Peak Classic Rock Routes - all

Brilliant to see so many people at Gogarth last weekend. Around 80 members from @therucksackclub @pinnacleclubuk and Gritstone Clubs plus various friends and family made the journey (pilgrimage?) onto Holy Island, despite the cruddy forecast. We were rewarded with wall-to-wall sunshine and a stupendous beach BBQ.
We achieved our Everest Challenge raising funds for @climbersagainstcancerofficial
On the fundraising front, we're only just out of Base Camp, having raised just over 50% of the £884.80 target (10p for every metre of Everest) It would be great if you could chip in for the Summit Push.

June may be a short month, but for Rucksack Club meets it's a long month, with five meets! - We begin the month with a working meet at Beudy Mawr, our hut in the heart of Snowdonia, when members will congregate to keep the hut in good order ready for another year. Of course it'll be a great social occasion also, with opportunities to get out onto the hills too. - A week later the focus moves to High Moss, our hut in the Duddon Valley, for a weekend road cycling meet. Plenty of opportunity for hill-climbs... - Then it's back to North Wales for our biggest outdoor meet of the year, our annual gathering at Gogarth. With cliffs to climb, headlands to walk and

For this month's "Dip into the Rucksack Club Journals" we’re back in 1994, and featuring Paul O’Reilly’s account of an epic with Andy Stewart and a pal in the Wind River Range: A War of Attrition on the War Bonnet. This edition also features Mike Cudahy’s continuous Munro round, various Alpine Adventures and trips to Ama Dablan and the Cedarberg Mountains. Wow - "Get Out There!" You can read the War Bonnet article and dip into this and another 120 years of the Journal at the website. Enjoy! #rucksackclub #getoutthere #windriverrange #climbing #mountaineering
