I’m hoping for a repeat of last year when the combination of location, weather and  people made for a great meet. I can reliably promise at least one of these this year and  an opportunity to cave, cycle, climb, run or walk based at Lowstern, Clapham, on the  edge of both the Dales and Bowland, in a modern hut with central heating and log fire.  I’ll have a couple of walks up my sleeve in case you can’t decide what to do. Let me  know by close of play on Tuesday 30 January if you plan to come, whether you need a  bed, and whether you want a meal on Saturday night (Caroline’s cheese & onion pie).  Hut details, and location, can be found at:

Andy Tomlinson and Andy Llewellyn – Himalayan Adventures

The two Andys (both past Rucksack Club Presidents of course) will be heading out to the Himalaya once again this Autumn, this time to the remote Saribung Himal situated north of the Annapurna range, finishing in the restricted area of Mustang. They will no doubt return with some stunning photographs and riveting tales of their experiences, on and off the hill, and will be entertaining us with them for the February Zoom show.

Pub: Owd Betts – opposite the layby. Popular with diners but probably quieter late afternoon.

Route AM fp NNE then NW, through wall at 828 169, fp NE then NW to Paradise (named on OS 25k), down steps, cross stream, up steps, WNW then NW up across field to stile, trk few metres SW then rising fp NE then N to T junction. Trk N then fp NW onto Whittle Hill/Pike, fp E is v boggy so return SE to trk E. Come and join us to experience some of the best Fell Running in the UK. Four of us (from Dark Peak) are joining forces to lead or suggest routes for the Saturday (6-7hours) at a very steady pace. We are no longer fast on the fells but we still love a big day out. We will also cater for everyone on the Saturday night.

Staying in the Morskie Oko hut in the Polish Tatras, this trip is already full with the
following club members attending: Kevin Wheeler, Andy Stewart, Gareth Williams, Ade
Pedley, Dave Palmer, James Forder, Mark Jennison, Robin Illingworth, Jeremy Windsor
and Richie Cameron. Most of us are flying out from Manchester on 22 February to
Krakow, staying overnight before moving on to Zakopane and the national park the
following day. If you can secure a room at the hut you are welcome to join us, but
these rooms fill up early. Our return flight to Manchester is on 29 February. It promises
to be to an exciting trip – if only because the guide book is in Polish! All the main
climbs are about an hour’s walk from the hut. It’s said to offer some of the best
winter climbing in the Tatras.
